Variscite’s upcoming VAR-SOM-MX91 SoM based on NXP i.MX 91

Tuesday, 30 May 2023

Variscite’s upcoming VAR-SOM-MX91 System on Module is being demonstrated for the first time today at COMPUTEX 2023 conference in Taipei as part of NXP’s announcement of its forthcoming i.MX 91 SoC.

The VAR-SOM-MX91 offers an attractive solution for cost-sensitive embedded designs such as IoT, connected sensors, smart home, industrial controllers, and metering. The SoM is based on NXP i.MX91 1.4GHz Arm® Cortex®-A55 processor and includes 2GB LPDDR4 memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet, dual CAN-FD, dual USB, audio in/out, ADC, display, and certified single or dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth/BLE along with integrated EdgeLock® Secure Enclave and industrial temperature grade.

The upcoming SoM shares a similarity with the recently released VAR-SOM-MX93 based on the NXP i.MX 93. Both platforms support features like CAN Bus, GbE, an industrial temperature rating and pin-compatibility with Variscite’s VAR-SOM Pin2Pin product family, while the VAR-SOM-MX91 offers leaner specifications to further optimize the system cost.

The Variscite VAR-SOM Pin2Pin product family provides easy scaling between SoMs with different processors and performances while using the same carrier board design. This product family supports a wide range of platforms from entry-level (i.MX6 UltraLite), through i.MX6, i.MX 8M/Mini/Nano/Plus, i.MX93, and AM625x, up to high-performance platforms like i.MX 8X and i.MX 8QuadMax. The use of a Pin2Pin SoM allows extended lifespan, reduced product development time, costs, and risk.

“Variscite is pleased to leverage its early access to NXP’s application processors by launching a SoM solution simultaneously with NXP’s release of the i.MX 91 processor. We continue to set market benchmarks in terms of reliability, scalability and price,” said Ofer Austerlitz, VP Business Development and Sales of Variscite. “With the VAR-SOM-MX91, we are able to deliver a solution for cost-sensitive designs with rich connectivity and scalability under our pin2pin family.”

Availability and Longevity

Evaluation kits are expected to be available later this year and released simultaneously with the NXP i.MX 91 processor. The VAR-SOM-MX91 is part of Variscite’s long-term longevity plan and provides a longevity commitment of 15 years.

Variscite Keeps Embedded Products on Track During Global Component Shortages + SMARC
Global component shortages are putting embedded projects under pressure. As a leading global System on Modules (SoMs) developer and manufacturer, we keep our customers’ development timelines on track by applying a supply chain strategy built on buffered inventories, in-house production, established relationships with multiple suppliers, and more than two decades of operational experience.
As AI-driven demand accelerated through 2025, memory chip shortages developed as semiconductor manufacturers shifted capacity to large-volume buyers, leaving many sectors, including medical, industrial, edge/IoT, and robotics poorly served. Climbing prices and lengthening lead times, exacerbated by knock-on effects across other SoM components, have created two clear pressure points. SoM vendors relying on outsourced manufacturing have limited flexibility when availability drops, leaving customers facing the same delays. Separately, product developers who chose chip-down architectures over SoM-based designs must procure components on their own. Those buying in smaller quantities are routinely pushed down supplier priority lists, and in many cases cannot get supply at all.
