Pierluigi Passaro Introduces Variscite’s i.MX 8M Mini and Nano SoMs

Wednesday, 28 Oct 2026  |  Pierluigi Passaro

Pierluigi Passaro, Variscite’s R&D expert, introduces the VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI and the VAR-SOM-MX8M-NANO – two cost-optimized modules designed for applications that require power-efficient processing, graphics capabilities, and real-time performance. Both SoMs are available with flexible memory, storage, and wireless configurations, allowing developers to pay only for the features they need.

Pierluigi Passaro: Here we have the VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI and NANO.

These two SoMs feature Cortex A53, real-time Cortex M, and also GPU and video acceleration. You can mount on it up to 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of eMMC, and NXP also provides Wi-Fi support.

For the NXP i.MX 8M Mini SoM, we support both the DART and the VAR-SOM versions.

On the software side, we have Linux, we have Android because of the included GPU, and we also have FreeRTOS because of the Cortex M4 microcontroller that is running on these SoMs.

These SoMs are quite interchangeable so customers can scale up and down according to their requirements.

Power-Efficient Processing for Cost-Sensitive Designs

The VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI and VAR-SOM-MX8M-NANO provide:
  • USB2.0: 2x OTG on the Mini and 1x OTG on the Nano, CAN/CAN-FD (Flexible Data-Rate)
  • UART, SPI, I2C, SD/MMC, RTC, JTAG, (PCIe on the Mini)
  • Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 with optional 802.15.4, and Bluetooth/BLE 5.2 or 5.4
  • Camera, audio, and display interfaces
  • Up to 4 GB DDR4 on the Mini and 2 GB DDR4 on the Nano, 8-128 GB eMMC
  • -40 to 85°C industrial temperature range
  • OS: Linux, Android, and FreeRTOS

Variscite and SecEdge: firmware-based TPM solution for i.MX SoMs
Adding TPM 2.0 to an embedded product usually starts with a hardware question: where does the security chip go? On Variscite’s i.MX-based modules, there is now another answer. Variscite and SecEdge are bringing SecEdge’s TPM 2.0 firmware, anchored in the processor’s own security hardware, to Variscite’s i.MX System on Module portfolio.
