
Pierluigi Passaro Introduces Variscite's Cost-Efficient i.MX 9 SoMs
Pierluigi Passaro, Variscite’s R&D expert, walks through the DART-MX91 and DART-MX93 – entry-level modules in NXP’s i.MX 9 family. These Systems on Module provide product teams a scalable, cost-optimized starting point for connected embedded designs.
Pierluigi Passaro: Here we have the DART-MX93 and the DART-MX91, the entry-level SoMs of NXP’s i.MX9 family.
Both modules provide UART and SPI interfaces, NXP Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.4, and 802.15.4 support. They feature 2 GB of memory, two USB ports, and CAN. The MX93 variant adds an onboard AI NPU with 0.5 TOPS of performance.
On the software side, both SoMs support Linux, Zephyr for real-time applications, and FreeRTOS.
For evaluation, the DART pairs with the Sonata board, while the VAR-SOM pairs with the Symphony board.
Cost-Effective Yet Feature-Rich
Variscite’s i.MX 91 and i.MX 93 SoMs’ main features are:
- 2x USB 2.0, 2x GbE, 2x CAN Bus
- UART, SPI, I2C, SD/MMC, touch, ADC
- Wi-Fi 6 802.11 ax/ac/a/b/g/n with optional 802.15.4, and Bluetooth/BLE 5.4
- Camera in, audio, and display outputs
- Up to 2GB LPDDR4, 8-128 GB eMMC
- -40 to 85°C industrial temperature range
- OS: Yocto, Debian. the i.MX93 also supports FreeRTOS and Zephyr.
Both SoMs are available in as part of Variscite’s Pin2Pin product families: the 55x30mm DART and the 67.8x33mm VAR-SOM.
