In this video, we’re unboxing the VAR-SOM-MX6 Development Kit based on NXP’s i.MX6 processor: What’s in the box? How to set up the kit in less than 2 minutes?
The VAR-SOM-MX6 Evaluation Kit is compatible with Variscite’s VAR-SOM-MX6 System on Module (SoM), based on ARM Cortex-A9 i.MX6 Quad, Dual, DualLite or Single core by NXP. The kit provides a great showcase of the VAR-SOM-MX6 connectivity features and performance. This versatile and popular solution is already used in a wide variety of applications and products although it’s ideal for industrial and intensive multimedia applications due to its wide temperature range (from -40 to 85 °C) and its video and graphics accelerations.
It can serve as a complete development platform for both evaluation and application development purposes.

As AI-driven demand accelerated through 2025, memory chip shortages developed as semiconductor manufacturers shifted capacity to large-volume buyers, leaving many sectors, including medical, industrial, edge/IoT, and robotics poorly served. Climbing prices and lengthening lead times, exacerbated by knock-on effects across other SoM components, have created two clear pressure points. SoM vendors relying on outsourced manufacturing have limited flexibility when availability drops, leaving customers facing the same delays. Separately, product developers who chose chip-down architectures over SoM-based designs must procure components on their own. Those buying in smaller quantities are routinely pushed down supplier priority lists, and in many cases cannot get supply at all.
