New i.MX93-based System on Module for Cost-Optimized Machine Learning at the Edge

Tuesday, 07 May 2024

Variscite is pleased to welcome the DART-MX93 to the DART Pin2Pin family: a rugged, cost-optimized solution for machine learning on edge devices for markets like industrial, IoT, smart devices, and wearables.

At only 55 x 30 millimeters—about half the size of a bank card—Variscite’s new DART-MX93 enables rich features to even the smallest devices. It’s another breakthrough for advanced processing power plus energy efficiency, with industrial-grade features at an extremely attractive price.

Like our VAR-SOM-MX93, released in 2023, the DART-MX93 is built with NXP’s i.MX93 processor. With up to 1.7GHz Dual Cortex™-A55 and 250MHz Cortex-M33 real-time co-processor and equipped with the Arm® neural processing unit Ethos™-U65 microNPU, the DART-MX93 is aptly designed for supporting ML-powered applications at the edge.

The i.MX 93-based SoM is a powerful integrated AI/ML Neural Processing Unit for smart edge devices at an attractive price. The SoM provides a 2x CAN bus, 2x GbE plus many features and connectivity options for sophisticated devices: camera inputs, audio in/out, ADC, 2x USB, certified WiFi 6 dual-band 802.11 ax/ac/a/b/g/n with optional 802.15.4, Bluetooth/BLE 5.3, and LVDS display outputs. Its built-in security ensures sensitive data and applications are protected.

Our new DART-MX93 is part of our long-term longevity plan and is projected to be available to customers for the next 15 years. Along with this assurance, as part of the DART Pin2Pin family, our customers can upgrade to future generations of DART SoMs without a redesign, and use the same carrier board for all pin-compatible SoMs. We offer this as a future-proof way to scale their device’s capabilities without extended development time, costs, and risks for future product iterations. The DART Pin2Pin family starts with the i.MX8M Mini and extends through the i.MX8M and iMX8M Plus to the iMX95.

Availability

Variscite’s alpha customers can place orders in production quantities for DART-MX93 SoMs starting at $39 per unit. We also offer DART-MX93 evaluation kits, including the scalable VAR-DT8MCustomBoard and an optional LVDS display with a touch panel.

Variscite Keeps Embedded Products on Track During Global Component Shortages + SMARC
Global component shortages are putting embedded projects under pressure. As a leading global System on Modules (SoMs) developer and manufacturer, we keep our customers’ development timelines on track by applying a supply chain strategy built on buffered inventories, in-house production, established relationships with multiple suppliers, and more than two decades of operational experience.
As AI-driven demand accelerated through 2025, memory chip shortages developed as semiconductor manufacturers shifted capacity to large-volume buyers, leaving many sectors, including medical, industrial, edge/IoT, and robotics poorly served. Climbing prices and lengthening lead times, exacerbated by knock-on effects across other SoM components, have created two clear pressure points. SoM vendors relying on outsourced manufacturing have limited flexibility when availability drops, leaving customers facing the same delays. Separately, product developers who chose chip-down architectures over SoM-based designs must procure components on their own. Those buying in smaller quantities are routinely pushed down supplier priority lists, and in many cases cannot get supply at all.
