Variscite Launches SMARC-Compatible SoM Portfolio with VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS

Thursday, 29 Jan 2026

Variscite, a global leader in System on Module design and manufacturing, is introducing a new series of modules conforming to the Smart Mobility Architecture (SMARC) standard. The VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS marks the debut of this portfolio, powered by the NXP i.MX 8M Plus processor.

AI Integration, Advanced Processing, Expanded Connectivity

The VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS features NXP’s Quad Cortex-A53 at 1.8GHz paired with a Cortex-M7 real-time co-processor running at 800MHz. This architecture delivers AI/ML processing capabilities alongside sophisticated Image Signal Processor technology for vision applications. Similar to the performance profile of Variscite’s DART-MX8M-PLUS, this module provides exceptional efficiency with power-optimized design.

The module extends beyond our already extended features by incorporating additional USB connections, dual Ethernet controllers supporting IEEE1588, enhanced general-purpose input/output options, and Secure Real Time Clock functionality. These capabilities address requirements for SWaP-C sensitive deployments across IoT/industrial IoT, point of sale terminals, medical devices, and other power-conscious mobile applications.

Exclusive On-Module Security

Security implementation on the VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS includes Trusted Platform Module 2.0 via dedicated hardware that performs cryptographic operations and safeguards sensitive information such as encryption keys and authentication credentials. The module satisfies European Union Cyber Resilience Act requirements and maintains compliance with the FIPS 140-3 standard for data protection and tamper-resistance, a feature unique to Variscite.

Extensive Customization and Comprehensive Support – Even for Small Orders

For all its SoMs, Variscite offers extensive configuration customizations for orders starting at just 20 units, as well as Board Support Packages and comprehensive development assistance for all supported operating systems – Yocto, Debian, Android, FreeRTOS, and Zephyr, without additional fees. This level of flexibility and support is unique among companies offering SMARC modules.

“The VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS is an ideal choice for low power, low cost, yet high performance devices,” stated Ofer Austerlitz, VP of Business Development and Sales at Variscite. “Expanding Variscite’s portfolio into standards-based SoMs with the SMARC SoM series is another example of the way Variscite supports and collaborates with its customers and continues to enable new generations of secure devices.”

Pin2Pin Scalability for Future Growth

This i.MX8M Plus is the first of Variscite’s new SMARC Pin2Pin family, joining the DART and VAR-SOM families. These pin-compatible families enable product upgrades using the same carrier design by swapping modules based on evolving processing and feature needs. Variscite modules deliver shortened development cycles, lower costs, minimized risks, and scalability from entry-level to high-performance configurations, backed by extended longevity commitments.

The next module in this portfolio, due to launch later in 2026, is the VAR-SMARC-MX95. Built on NXP’s i.MX 95 processor, this SoM will introduce independent Safety Island architecture with six-core processing capability.

Samples and evaluation kits become available in Q1 2026. Reserve an evaluation kit by contacting your sales representative or [email protected].
